In a small Mexican town in 1963, Luisa (Pina Pellicer) works the counter of a bakery owned by Don Albino (Ignacio López Tarso), a widower who has begun to notice her. She loves children and has always pictured herself married. Roberto Gavaldón, adapting a B. Traven story, follows her as she tells Albino she will marry Carlos, a driver she met only recently, and she goes on quietly hoping for the family she has imagined.
