“When someone knocks on your door and says permesso?... be careful before you say Avanti!”

A grand hotel on the Italian island of Ischia is where Wendell Armbruster, Jr. (Jack Lemmon), an American businessman, arrives in 1972 to collect his father's body. The old man, a wealthy tycoon, died in a car crash beside his longtime mistress, and Wendell meets her daughter Pamela Piggott (Juliet Mills) at the hotel. Billy Wilder sends him there expecting a short, orderly errand, which Wendell treats as one more thing to get through.
