The Avengers are a few years into life as a team, living and working together after the events of the 2012 film. Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) tries to start up a dormant peacekeeping program, and it turns on Earth's heroes in the form of Ultron. Joss Whedon spreads the action across Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson), the five of them still adjusting to uneasy alliances.
