Ay, Carmela!

“Across the battlefields of Spain, she won the heart of every man.”

Spain, the closing months of the Civil War: a troupe of travelling comics plays for Republican soldiers on the front lines. Tired of the trenches, Carmela (Carmen Maura), Paulino (Andrés Pajares) and the young Gustavete (Gabino Diego) set out for Valencia and cross into Nationalist territory by mistake. Carlos Saura leaves them under guard in enemy hands, Carmela still in her stage costume.
