Baaria

Why does a whole Sicilian town seem to unspool through one boy's eyes, from the 1920s on? In Bagheria, the shepherd Peppino Torrenuova (Francesco Scianna) works the hills to help his poor family, and Giuseppe Tornatore watches the village around him as fifty years pass. Peppino grows up, joins the Communist Party and marries a local girl, Mannina (Margareth Madè), and the film keeps coming back to what it takes to build a life there.
