Babette's Feast

In a remote village on the Danish coast in the late 19th century, two aging sisters, Martine (Birgitte Federspiel) and Filippa (Bodil Kjer), keep their late father's strict congregation together. Their French housekeeper Babette (Stéphane Audran) has a past no one in the village knows, and she cooks their plain meals without comment. Gabriel Axel's film holds that pleasure and devotion, which the villagers treat as opposites, may be the same thing.
