Lily Powers (Barbara Stanwyck) leaves a speakeasy and starts climbing, trading her looks and her body for each step up in the world. Alfred E. Green's pre-Code drama sends her through one man after another, among them the banker Courtland Trenholm (George Brent). Lily wants money and standing, but the film keeps asking whether anything she gains will make her happy.
