“Always make a scene.”

Manny Torres (Diego Calva) wants in on the movies, and in Hollywood in the late 1920s that means starting wherever the work is. Around him are Nellie LaRoy (Margot Robbie), an ambitious newcomer, and Jack Conrad (Brad Pitt), a star at the height of the silent era, all of them chasing a place in pictures just as sound arrives. Damien Chazelle fills the screen with crowds and noise, and lets the excess run on a long, loud rope.
