Colonel Joseph Madden (John Wayne) is an American officer left on Luzon after the fall of Bataan, with orders to turn the island's scattered fighters into a guerrilla army. Edward Dmytryk puts Madden beside Captain Andres Bonifacio (Anthony Quinn) and a schoolteacher, Bertha Barnes (Beulah Bondi), all of them working against the Japanese under Maj. Hasko (Richard Loo). The film is shot in black and white, and its working title was The Invisible Army.
