In 1885, Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) digs the DeLorean out of an old mineshaft and goes looking for Doc Brown, who has been living in the Wild West for years. The time machine breaks down, and in a town of spurs and saloons the schoolteacher Clara Clayton (Mary Steenburgen) catches Doc's eye while Buford Tannen (Thomas F. Wilson) takes a dislike to Marty. Zemeckis sends Marty chasing after a friend he can't leave behind, and Marty keeps taking the bait.
