Jim Slater (Richard Widmark) rides out to find the one man who survived the Apache ambush at Gila Valley, the same ambush that killed the father Jim never knew. That man went for help and vanished with a lot of gold, and Jim's questions bring several people out to shoot at him. John Sturges keeps Jim and Karyl Orton (Donna Reed) crossing paths on the same trail, with the Apaches stirring again and a range war closing in.
