In Chicago in 1983, Mick O'Brien (Sean Penn) is a teenage thug who splits his time between petty crime and his girlfriend. A job meant to rob a local drug dealer goes wrong, and Mick lands in a juvenile prison where violence is expected and respect is paid back in revenge. He shares the place with Paco Moreno (Esai Morales), and Rick Rosenthal films the cell blocks tight and grainy, so the walls seem to lean in.
