In 1931, Eddie Collins (James Dunn) and Dorothy Haley (Sally Eilers) are young and working-class, and both have decided they don't trust the opposite sex. They fall in love anyway and marry, with Frank Borzage following the courtship and the first months of the household. Neither of them has learned how to say what they feel, so the doubts they brought into the marriage keep coming up between them.
