Amantha Starr (Yvonne De Carlo) wants nothing more than to go on being the cherished daughter of a Kentucky plantation owner, schooled in the best places and sure of who she is. When he dies, his debts come due, and she learns her mother was a slave, which makes Amantha property to be sold. Raoul Walsh follows her into the hands of Hamish Bond (Clark Gable), a wealthy buyer whose kindness she cannot trust and whose hold on her is hard to name.
