Bandits of Orgosolo

(1961)Directed by Vittorio De Seta98 minDrama

Michele Cossu is a Sardinian shepherd, a peasant with a small flock and a family who depend on it. When a policeman is murdered, suspicion lands on him, and though he is innocent, he does not give himself up. He has no faith in the courts, and a trial would mean leaving his sheep unattended. Vittorio De Seta casts local people as his actors, and the film says plainly that for men like Michele, the law is one more thing that can take what little they own.
