Barbara the Fair with the Silken Hair

(1970)Directed by Aleksandr Rou81 minFamily, Fantasy

Tsar Yeremei (Mikhail Pugovkin) sets off on a long walk to survey his lands and write down everything in them. Bending over a well on the way home, he is seized by Chudo-Yudo (Georgi Millyar), the underwater king, who demands whatever the tsar owns without knowing it. Aleksandr Rou stages the fairy tale as a bright, handmade storybook, with painted villages and a lord of the deep who is more cranky than cruel.
