“Love was a gamble she couldn't afford to lose.”
Mary "Swan" Rutledge (Miriam Hopkins) steps off the boat in 1850s San Francisco to meet her fiancé and learns he is already dead. With no money, she takes a place at the roulette wheel of the Bella Donna, a rowdy gambling house owned by Luis Chamalis (Edward G. Robinson). Howard Hawks sets her down in the gold fields' noisiest town, where the miner Jim Carmichael (Joel McCrea) keeps losing his dust at her table, and Chamalis wants her for himself.
