Barefoot Gen
“The bombing of Hiroshima as seen through the eyes of a young boy.”
Hiroshima, 1945, in the last months of the war, where young Gen Nakaoka (Issei Miyazaki) lives with his parents and siblings under wartime shortages. Mori Masaki, adapting Keiji Nakazawa's manga, tells it from a child's height, with the bombing arriving through the eyes of a boy who has barely stopped being hungry. What carries the film is Gen's tie to his younger brother Shinji (Masaki Kouda), and how hard they hold on to each other.
