(1963)Directed by Nelson Pereira dos Santos100 minDrama, Western

Fabiano (Átila Iório) and Sinhá Vitória (Maria Ribeiro) leave their dried-out land and walk into the backlands of northeastern Brazil with their two boys and their dog Baleia. Nelson Pereira dos Santos, adapting Graciliano Ramos's 1938 novel, shoots the walk in sun-bleached light, and the family gets by on whatever the dry country and the people in it allow. Fabiano and Sinhá Vitória say little to each other, and they hold the family together by going on.
