Lt. Col. Iceal Hambleton (Gene Hackman) just wants to get out of enemy territory alive after his aircraft is shot down during the Vietnam War. He is a weapons countermeasures expert, and the Air Force badly wants him back, but a shortage of helicopters holds up the rescue. Peter Markle follows him as he works out an escape route by radio with Capt. Bartholomew Clark (Danny Glover), a reconnaissance pilot, while the area around him waits to be bombed.
