Thugs have started smashing up the tenants of a condemned Manhattan block so that a tycoon can raze it for a skyscraper. Frank Riley (Hume Cronyn) and Faye Riley (Jessica Tandy) are among the few who refuse to leave, and Matthew Robbins brings in a small fleet of mechanical aliens that land for a recharge and decide to stay. Faye is still setting out her kitchen for the tenants, the machines humming somewhere in the rubble.
