The Sharmas, a quarrelsome joint family, have driven off one cook after another when Raghu (Rajesh Khanna) turns up and takes the job. Hrishikesh Mukherjee lets him settle in, fixing meals, songs and small repairs for a household that barely speaks to itself. His warmth reaches Krishna (Jaya Bachchan) and the elders alike, and the film treats a family's temper as a thing that shared cooking can soften.
