“Love is just a game of chance”

The Riviera casinos of 1963 are where Jean Fournier (Claude Mann), a young bank clerk, goes for a first bet and meets Jackie Demaistre (Jeanne Moreau), a platinum-haired woman who has already lost a good deal. Jacques Demy follows the two of them as Jean gets drawn into her routine of tables, winnings and sudden departures. Gambling is the thing that holds her, and it is plainly stronger than anything he can offer.
