On Chicago's South Side, August Monroe (Khalil Everage) is a teenage hip-hop prodigy who has stopped leaving the house, and his mother Carla (Uzo Aduba) is the one keeping him there. Romelo Reese (Anthony Anderson), a former music manager with a ruined name, comes to hear what August makes in his bedroom. Chris Robinson stays close on the two of them, August bent over his equipment, Romelo in the doorway listening.
