In the Gulf of Djibouti, a section of French Foreign Legion soldiers trains under the sun, and their days run on strict, repeated order. Galoup (Denis Lavant), the officer who drills them, remembers that life as a happy one, until a promising young recruit, Sentain (Grégoire Colin), starts a jealousy in him. Claire Denis adapts Melville's novella *Billy Budd*, and what it tells is how hard a man holds to the discipline that has become his whole identity.
