Beauty and the Beast

(1946)Directed by Jean Cocteau96 minDrama, Fantasy, Romance
“Once upon a time…”

Belle (Josette Day) is the kind daughter in a household of vain, quarrelsome siblings, and she is the one who agrees to go when her father (Marcel André) is bound to the Beast's castle. Jean Cocteau fills the castle with living candelabras and walls that breathe, and the Beast (Jean Marais) gives her a key and one condition. Belle stays gentle through all of it, and the Beast starts to depend on her.
