Being There

(1979)Directed by Hal Ashby130 min · PGComedy, Drama
“A story of chance.”

Chance (Peter Sellers) has never left the Washington D.C. house where he tends the garden, and everything he knows of the world comes from television. When the old man who owns the house dies, he is put out on the street, and the people he meets begin to hear wisdom in his plain talk about plants and growing. Hal Ashby lets the misunderstanding build in quiet rooms, where Chance says exactly what he means and everyone else hears what they need.
