Beloved

“The past has a life of its own.”

Sethe (Oprah Winfrey) is a former slave living in Ohio after the Civil War, raising her daughter Denver (Kimberly Elise) in a house that is haunted. Paul D (Danny Glover), who knew her in slavery, turns up and moves in, and not long after, a strange young woman calling herself Beloved (Thandiwe Newton) arrives at the door. Jonathan Demme follows the household as it takes her in, and what Sethe stands to lose is the fragile life she has built for her family.
