Berlin-Alexanderplatz: The Story of Franz Biberkopf

(1931)Directed by Phil Jutzi90 minCrime, Drama

Franz Biberkopf (Heinrich George) walks out of prison after four years and tries to build an ordinary life in Berlin. It does not go well, and the work, the women and the men he falls in with keep pulling him back toward trouble, among them Reinhold (Bernhard Minetti) and Sonja (Margarete Schlegel). Phil Jutzi adapts Alfred Döblin's 1929 novel with Döblin himself co-writing the screenplay, so the book's city comes to the screen largely as its author wrote it.
