In 1935, Billy Bathgate (Loren Dean), a teenager from the Bronx, gets taken in by the gangster Dutch Schultz (Dustin Hoffman) and starts running errands for his crew. Robert Benton, working from a Tom Stoppard script, puts Billy beside Drew Preston (Nicole Kidman), his first love, and beside Bo Weinberg (Bruce Willis) and Irving (Steve Buscemi) in Schultz's circle. The boy wants a place in this world, and the longer he stays, the closer he stands to men who kill.
