Billy Liar

(1963)Directed by John Schlesinger98 minComedy, Romance, Drama
“one guy ... three girls ... one ring!”

Billy Fisher (Tom Courtenay) is a young undertaker's assistant in a northern English town who invents his way out of every tight spot. He lies to his parents, his bosses and his three girlfriends, and the lies have started to pile up. John Schlesinger follows him through a day when London is on offer, with Liz (Julie Christie) the one person who might actually go with him. It's about wanting a different life and finding it easier to imagine than to start.
