Nobody on the New York scene in 1940 can say quite how Charlie "Bird" Parker (Forest Whitaker) gets those sounds out of a saxophone, only that they can't stop listening. Clint Eastwood cuts the film as a montage of scenes from his life, and Chan (Diane Venora), his wife, tries to keep him from the drugs he has taken up. Whitaker stands in a doorway with the horn at his side, the room behind him lit and empty.
