Bitter Rice

Why would a woman on the run from the police walk into a flooded field and start planting rice? Francesca (Doris Dowling) slips in among the women workers of Northern Italy to hide, leaving Walter (Vittorio Gassman) behind until he follows. Giuseppe De Santis puts four people in that mud, Francesca, Walter, Silvana (Silvana Mangano) and the soldier Marco (Raf Vallone), and a robbery, a love and a killing are all waiting there.
