It is 1915 at a French trading post in West Africa, and the news of the war arrives months late. The colonists, Sergeant Bosselet (Jean Carmet) and the shopkeeper Paul Rechampot (Jacques Dufilho) among them, decide to fight their German neighbors and conscript the local population. Jean-Jacques Annaud sets a young geographer, Hubert Fresnoy (Jacques Spiesser), against the men he lives among, and he has to take over a war nobody there is fit to run.
