Why does a white couple's daughter have dark skin, and why does the mother turn on her for it? José Carlos Ruiz (Pedro Infante) is a singer married to Ana Luisa de la Fuente (Emilia Guiú), a beautiful woman who blames him for the child. Joselito Rodríguez adapts Fannie Hurst's novel *Imitation of Life* for Mexico, and he keeps his attention on the girl and the mother who rejects her.
