In 1956, a teacher on an Israeli kibbutz runs into an old friend, and the meeting drags her back to the Netherlands in 1944, where someone betrayed her. Rachel Stein (Carice van Houten) is the only one to survive a massacre of Jews being smuggled across the Biesbosch, and the resistance asks her to seduce the SS officer Ludwig Müntze (Sebastian Koch). Paul Verhoeven keeps her close to Müntze, an enemy she is meant to deceive and finds harder to hate.
