In a Pennsylvania coal town, Joe Radek (Paul Muni) is a simple miner who just wants to dig his shift and go home to Anna Novak (Karen Morley). Then the men's fight with management turns violent, and company police like Slim Johnson (William Gargan) start answering strikes with clubs. Michael Curtiz, working from the 1929 walkout that inspired it, stages the pits and the picket lines with the speed of a newsreel.
