Black Girl

Diouana (Mbissine Thérèse Diop) leaves Dakar for the south of France, hired by a white couple to be a governess, and once she arrives she is kept to the kitchen and the apartment. Ousmane Sembène, in his first feature, keeps the camera close on the cooking, the cleaning and the closed rooms. Diouana had imagined a better life abroad, and she now spends her days as a servant in someone else's home.
