Two warring leaders meet in 1930s Arabia, and the victor, Emir Nesib (Antonio Banderas), takes the rival Sultan Amar's (Mark Strong) two sons as a pledge of peace, leaving the Yellow Belt between them untouched. Twelve years on, Auda (Tahar Rahim) buries himself in books while an American arrives with word that oil lies under that empty sand. Jean-Jacques Annaud films the desert and the Emir's palace in the same glare, gold on gold.
