Black Jack

(1979)Directed by Ken Loach105 minAdventure, History

Young Tolly (Stephen Hirst) is forced to run with Black Jack (Jean Franval), a ruffian who has just escaped the gallows, and the two are soon tangled up with body-snatchers, private lunatic asylums and travelling fairs. Ken Loach sets the story in Yorkshire in 1750, with Belle Carter (Louise Cooper) joining the pair along the way. Tolly is honest and young, and every road they take puts him closer to people who would use him.
