Black Narcissus

(1947)Directed by Michael Powell, Emeric Pressburger100 minDrama
“A story of exquisite yearning in a strange and beautiful land. Towering over the screen ... as the mountains that saw it happen.”

The old palace on the Himalayan mountainside pulls at every nun sent to turn it into a school and a hospital, and the pull grows stronger the longer they stay. Sister Clodagh (Deborah Kerr) leads the Anglican order into thin air, hard weather and the nearby government man, Mr. Dean (David Farrar). Powell and Pressburger build the whole mountain in saturated color, and the palace looks more alive than the people in it.
