“The Musical Event of the Holiday Season”

It is Christmas in Baltimore, and Langston (Jacob Latimore), a street-wise teenager raised by his single mother Naima (Jennifer Hudson), is sent to New York to stay with relatives he has never really known. Waiting there are his grandparents, Reverend Cornell Cobbs (Forest Whitaker) and Aretha Cobbs (Angela Bassett). Kasi Lemmons, adapting the 1961 Langston Hughes play, lets the story break into song as the holiday goes on.
