It is Carnaval in Rio, and the hillside favelas are loud with drums and rehearsing samba schools. Orfeu (Breno Mello) falls for Eurydice (Marpessa Dawn), a newcomer to the city, while Marcel Camus follows the two of them through the crowds and up the steep streets. Mira, Orfeu's fiancée, is looking for him, and a figure dressed as Death is looking for Eurydice.
