Martha Travis (Rosanna Arquette) is a medium who passes messages from the dead to their living relatives in public performances. At one show she gives Mary Kuron a message from her husband Tom, who is still alive, and Martha knows he will be killed and who will do it. Mike Hodges follows her through Rock Hill and Charlotte, where the killer learns what she knows, and her father Walter (Jason Robards) is the one person standing close to her.
