Peter Denver (Van Heflin) is a successful Broadway producer who wants one thing from his wife Iris (Gene Tierney) and his work: to be left alone to enjoy both. Then Nancy Ordway (Peggy Ann Garner), a young stage hopeful he has been mentoring, is found dead, and suspicion lands on him. Nunnally Johnson fills the 1954 CinemaScope frame with the opening-night glamour of Broadway, while Peter is the one man in the room with nowhere to stand.
