“Never take your eyes off the bull”

Carmen (Macarena García) grows up in 1920s Andalusia without a mother, a girl raised in the shadow of her father, a famous bullfighter who was crippled in the ring. Pablo Berger tells her story as a silent film in black and white, with Maribel Verdú as Encarna, the stepmother who runs the household. The two live under one roof, and the closeness between them is the kind that can turn cruel.
