Why would a crooked politician send a Black railroad worker to be sheriff of Rock Ridge? Hedley Lamarr (Harvey Korman) wants the town gone, because a new railroad is coming through. Mel Brooks puts Bart (Cleavon Little) in charge of people who won't have him, with only Jim (Gene Wilder), a gunfighter who stays drunk, on his side, and the film spends its time with the two of them there, a couple of men who stay put.
