Blithe Spirit

“Elvira is the kind of gal who can turn an evening into a night you'll never forget!”

In 1945 England, the novelist Charles Condomine (Rex Harrison) invites the medium Madame Arcati (Margaret Rutherford) to his home for a séance, mostly to gather material for his next book. David Lean directs the evening as a drawing-room comedy, with Arcati announcing herself as a genuine spiritualist and Charles smirking through it. Instead she calls up Elvira (Kay Hammond), his first wife, who now shares a house with Ruth (Constance Cummings), the second.
