Chiku Shan is a village on the Communist Chinese coast, and its people want out. Capt. Tom Wilder (John Wayne), an American Merchant Marine captain pulled from a Chinese jail by those same villagers, is shanghaied into taking the whole village to Hong Kong on an ancient paddle steamer. William A. Wellman puts Wilder at the wheel with Cathy Grainger (Lauren Bacall) nearby, a stubborn man hauling a boatload of strangers he never agreed to carry.
