Why does a poor widow's son in Seville walk toward the bull ring when his mother begs him not to? Juan Gallardo (Rudolph Valentino) rises quickly as a toreador and marries his childhood sweetheart Carmen (Lila Lee), until Doña Sol (Nita Naldi) enters his life, and he loves two women at once. Fred Niblo follows Juan as his fame grows, and he meets the bandit Plumitas (Walter Long), who lives a life he can recognize.
